Fresh Friday Roundup - May 10th, 2024
Our weekly selection of music news + new music. All you love in one email.
THOUGHTS:
Steve Albini died this week. That dude was an absolute titan in the noise rock arena. He had some problematic edge lord tendencies that I did not particularly care for, but he also produced the best Nirvana album (In Utero, don’t @ me).
In other thoughts, David Foster Wallace once wrote an essay entitled “A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again.” I’ve never read it, but it’s one of my favorite titles of all time and I regularly think of it when I’m having a bad time in a social setting (e.g., bars, parties where I only know like 1 person, etc.). In this week’s installment, music festivals. I attended Shaky Knees in Atlanta this past weekend. Everything hurt and then it started raining and I missed Billy Idol.
NEWS:
All is quiet on the western front — If you haven’t been following Da(d)ne’s excellent recap series about the Drake - Kendrick feud, you really should. I don’t know how else I’d be keeping up with this shit. Anyway, nobody has dropped in several days. Are we at a stalemate? Or will the arms race escalate further; will Kendrick accuse Drake of killing Epstein? Will Drake point out that Kendrick has never specifically gone out of his way to denounce the Unabomber? Probably. ANYWAY, Drake had a security guard shot outside of his home.
Brian Wilson placed in conservatorship. His daughters recently won the legal battle against the Beach Boys phenom after being diagnosed with dementia. The conservatorship will be run by his longtime publicist, business partner, and manager LeeAnn Hard.
Dennis Thompson dies — The final living member of the original MC5 lineup was 75.
9/10 Astroworld wrongful death cases have been settled. One family plans to head to trial - the family of a 9 year old who was killed.
50 Cent sues Daphne Joy over a false rape claim. 50 claims she made the charge after he sought sole custody of their child.
Justin Bieber is going to be a father. Now Dane has a talking point when he meets Bieber. On a side note, does this make Bieber ‘Daddy?’
Maryland outlaws hidden ticket fees — I still don’t fully understand how this helps consumers. Like, they’re still charging the fees but you know about it before checkout?
Austin City Limits 2024 has been announced. Dua Lipa, Tyler the Creator, and Chris Stapleton to headline with strong supporting acts in Blink 182, Sturgill Simpson, and Pretty Lights.
SUCH:
What’s the channel.WAV listening to?
Botts: Start listening boys.
Bslime: Bob would have thrived on Tik Tok.
Da(d)ne: I’m learning so much, y’all.
NEW MUSIC:
Family Matters - Drake: This is like a bad drawing your kid shows you and you have to put it on a fridge next to a picture of Picasso’s hands. That’s a solid reference and you should check it out.
Not Like Us - Kendrick Lamar: Beef, it’s what’s for dinner.
Here’s a lot of recent rap, I’m not a fan of rap and thus cannot comment on it with the enthusiasm Da(d)ne can:
If y’all don’t watch Dave, you should. I became a fan of Gunna after watching the show.
Stampede: Vol. 1 - Orville Peck: Everyone’s favorite cowboy has dropped a new album. Give it a listen, it’s all Aaron will be listening to. Aaron is already praying for Vol. 2.
Meticulous - Rainbow Kitten Surprise: The story behind RKS is so funny. ALLEGEDLY, a friend of the band got syphilis, refused to get it treated, and as his brain deteriorated all he could ALLEGEDLY say was Rainbow Kitten Surprise.
No Shade at Pitti - The Chainsmokers: Bslime loves to chain-smoke!!
Nowhere To Run - Kings of Leon: The fact Kings of Leon made a song called ‘nowhere to run’ with cover art being ‘can we please have fun’ is such a Kings of Leon move lol.
That’s all we’ve got today folks. Aaron is off to listen to new Orville Peck.
Know a potential subscriber? Tell them to subscribe! Aaron will be reviewing his favorite cowboy soon…
